Alton Little Theater Brings “ALABAMA STORY” to the Riverbend Region

Exciting news for theater lovers in the Riverbend Region! Alton Little Theater (ALT) is thrilled to announce the production of Kenneth Jones’ acclaimed play, “ALABAMA STORY,” set to grace the stage for eight unforgettable performances from March 15th to the 24th. This marks a significant achievement for ALT and a dream come true for Director Lee Cox, who has been captivated by the play since its pre-publication days in 2019.

Lee Cox’s journey with “ALABAMA STORY” began when she first encountered the play at the St. Louis Repertory Theater. Mesmerized by its beautiful narrative and staging, Cox became determined to bring this masterpiece to ALT. Her persistence paid off, and now, “ALABAMA STORY” is set to be a highlight of ALT’s 90th Season.

Co-directed by Cox and Gail Drillinger, who also stars as the lead character, Emily Wheelock Reed, the play is inspired by true events from 1959. It tells the story of Reed, a librarian in Montgomery, Alabama, whose life changes dramatically due to the controversy surrounding a children’s book titled “The Rabbit’s Wedding.” The story delves into the challenges faced by Reed, the author, and illustrator of the book, Garth Williams, and the impact of the book’s controversy on their community and the American Library Association.

Featuring a talented cast of nine actors, including Dennis Frymire, Jess McCawley, and Sean Williams, “ALABAMA STORY” brings to life a tale of humor, heartbreak, and hope. The play not only revisits a pivotal moment in history but also resonates with the present-day debates on book banning.

For Cox, this play holds a special place in her heart. As someone who grew up loving books and spending time in the local Hayner Library, bringing stories that emphasize the power of literature to the ALT stage is her way of contributing to the community before her retirement. Kenneth Jones, the playwright, has been instrumental in this process, providing Cox with valuable insights and original notes that have shaped the production.

The play also highlights the challenges of sourcing “The Rabbit’s Wedding,” now a rare find due to its central role in the narrative. However, thanks to the efforts of the Hayner Library’s National loan service, ALT has managed to obtain the necessary copies for the show. Moreover, audiences will have the chance to win a collection of Garth Williams’ books through a special raffle during the play’s run.

“ALABAMA STORY” has not only become Garth Williams’ most famous book but also a symbol of the ongoing conversation about literary freedom. With ALT being one of the sixty theaters across the country licensed to produce the play in 2024, it’s a testament to the theater’s commitment to presenting significant and thought-provoking works.

Alton Little Theater is more than just a community theater; it’s a beacon of dreams and big achievements in the world of live performance. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this powerful play. Tickets are available at the box office or online. For interviews and photo opportunities, please contact Lee Cox directly.

Join us at ALT for a story of love, courage, and the transformative power of literature. “ALABAMA STORY” is not just a play; it’s a celebration of the enduring spirit of storytelling and the impact it has on our lives.
